My partner Kim and I helped out with the design and UI of the PhotoCrank website.
We thought it was a great idea when Jeff and Co. told us about the concept this summer. Now that the site is live and usable, I’m completely sold that this will take off with users. It’s just too much fun.
A possible lurker here is the fact that most people who take pictures with their phone aren’t hosting them online. “Cranking” ones photos may be just the thing to get these users to start managing their phone pics on the web. I wouldn’t be surprised if PhotoCrank users started using the site as a general way to store their photos online (a la Flickr, Zoomr).
Hi guys — love the service, love the apparent ease of use of the ability to add graphics and text to camera phone images. I get stuck on the name of the product/service — the word ‘crank’ in my world usually means a cynical, angry old man (or half the blogosphere), so PhotoCrank to me sounds like someone who’s always complaining that “in my day, we didn’t have digital images on our phones, we had to stand still for 2 hours before we could snap off a photograph.” I realize, of course, that “cranking” a photo in this universe means to churn out an image with the additional features, but I’m wondering whether the masses will hear the word crank and immediately think of the cranky old man.
